Squirrels
General Description: Mostly gray with a white to rusty colored underside and rust colored ears. Gray squirrels may have white or brownish bellies and, in winter, white ear tufts. Black and Albino squirrels are a variation of the Grey squirrel. They range 8 to 10 inches, with a tail roughly the same length and weigh about 1.5 pounds on average. Squirrels make a variety of sounds including a harsh chirping and chattering noise.
Squirrels feed on acorns, hazelnuts, walnuts, and seeds of many trees, plus fungi, and elm buds in late winter – all are important foods for squirrels. Squirrels are accused of digging up lawns as they bury acorns. They may also dig up flower bulbs and, in years past, were serious pests around small cornfields and wooden corn cribs.
Squirrel numbers have increased in recent years due to suburban sprawl and backyard bird feeders. Grey squirrels are one of the few animals that thrive where houses break up natural woodlands.
If you have squirrels living in your house NEVER use poison to get rid of them. You could end up poisoning your dog, cat, wildlife, or yourself. It’s illegal to poison tree squirrels. If you poison a ground squirrel, it will get thirsty, and weak, venture out of its hole and your cat or dog could eat it and die. A hawk will also prey on a squirrel which could lead to its poisoning. It is highly recommended you use bait traps.
Exclusion is the cheapest, easiest, and MOST LONG LASTING method for controlling wildlife.
